The mind itself may be brilliant, but you have to control the desires so that you are the master of your destiny. You are the captain of your soul, "you" being the Higher Self. But so often we just allow the ego to take control. You must be within-centered- and with the ego under control of the Higher Self. Your mind must be the kingdom, otherwise you will never be happy – you could not possibly be!
When you are ready to pass over and you look back on your life, what will you see? Just a life of ups and downs, like the valley of a thousand hills, never really having achieved anything spiritually. That must be the only tragedy of death!
It all depends on you. No one can help you. When it comes to your spiritual life only you can walk the road, totally alone like the prodigal son. No one helped him back, he walked on his own, but as he came closer to home he felt the pull of the Father waiting for him, and finally arrived at the inner centre, the God centre.
First, YOU have to make the effort. YOU have to discipline yourself, control your mind, KNOW what you are doing and WHY. You have to see your reactions, you have to UNDERSTAND yourself.
You have to die for truth about yourself. Have you the courage?
