Do you respect a beggar? Do you disrespect a rich man? Today people are evaluated only on the basis of the possessions and status. A person’s worth is decided by how much he owns. His power and influence also get importance.

The desire to possess arises from comparison & jealousy. If our neighbour buys a new AC, our house gets warmer. From childhood we are conditioned to desire what other has? When we are not able to fulfil the desire we become unhappy & consider it a failure. We become happy only when we acquire what we want.

This happiness is but short-lived, till we find one more thing to covet. Happiness seems to be in the process of acquisition—in the chase rather than enjoyment of what we have.

Greed & envy are the root causes of all our sorrow. Buddha said “All suffering is caused by Human desires”. He was referring here to unending stream of “wants” that we develop out of comparison and not the need-based desires.

Joy is the Natural state of a human being. Joy happens when there is no comparison, when there is no attachment for an acquisition. This desire for possession imprisons us and causes sorrow.

Hence, stop wanting to acquire more & more. Enjoy what you have. There is no need to renounce what you already possess. Renounce only your fantasies. That is the Gateway to Bliss.
