Peace is not just absence of violence; it is complete cessation of aggression along with its roots and imprints in the mind. In Buddhism terminology, the word nirvana is used to refer to that state of mind, called total peace.
We must consider others well-being. Universal altruism is the central message of Buddhism. The first requirement is to broaden your outlook so that your view does not remain narrow & restricted. You develop the attitude of concern towards viewpoint of others.
If you adopt an attitude of aggression, and competition, no matter how high your ideals, they will lead you practically nowhere. Even to progress in matters of spirituality, the right attitude is essential.
Non-aggression does not imply that a person is unreasonably soft, or submissive; but it is considered as ‘skilful’ approach in handling a situation. Buddha never said, you should be submissive; but should be skilful in communicating your disagreement, when the attitude is found friendly, & receptive.
Peace is not a silent situation that can be achieved by shutting all the doors & windows and not allowing any disturbing noises to come in. But the test of real peace is when one is able to maintain calm despite a disturbing atmosphere.
The secret for remaining calm in adverse situations, is to develop one’s consciousness. The real signs of higher consciousness are becoming more humble, & more aware of the independent nature of things around us.
According to Tibetan Buddhist saying, “If you want to know about your deeds in the past, look at your present and if you want to know about your future destination, watch your present mind. Therefore for a better tomorrow work for a better society today with attitude of non-aggression.
