Nature has an inexhaustible field of creativity, energy, orderliness and intelligence. Everything in the universe emerges from this quantum energy level. This same field of nature’s unlimited potential can be located within each individual, at the source of thought. Imagine a wave in the sea, even a big wave, has limitations: it is only of certain height and certain width. Now imagine the wave settles down, and merges with the sea. Then its value becomes unlimited and infinitely more powerful.
The mind is capable of same settling down or transcending process. During Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation (TM) the waves of thought retire to the source of thought. Transcend means to go beyond and Meditation means to thinking. During TM the mind experiences progressively less excited states of thought until one transcends completely, to arrive at the source. It is then that the agitated, limited value of thought gains the unlimited status of Being, and the silent depth of the ocean of consciousness.
The mind is like the body of water, choppy on the surface, silent and stable at the depth. When we experience only the ‘noisy’ surface level of thinking difficulties abound. If we could anchor the surface mind to its vacuum state we would be insulated from the ‘storms of change’. In Bhagvad Gita (2.48), Krishna says, “Yogasthah kuru karmani”: Established in Yoga or pure consciousness perform actions. Here the mind is most powerful and effective.” At this level we do less and accomplish more. The growth of inner silence is the basis of spiritual unfolding.
Consciousness is the Prime mover of our life. Everything we do depends upon the level of our consciousness. If our mind is sleepy, agitated, or negative, then everything we perceive reflects incoherence. But if consciousness is fresh and alert, everything is perceived rightly. The Vedas say that the knowledge is structured in consciousness. The world is as we are. If we are anchored to the silent blissful state of consciousness, everything we do becomes joyful. Hence through TM one must raise his level of consciousness to this calm and blissful state.
