Duryodhana in the Maharashtra is the very embodiment of greed and envy. Yudhishtir on the contrary is righteous and noble. The grabbing tendency of the former deprived the latter of the rightful share of the empire. The war has been declared, as Duryodhana did not agree for peaceful settlement & wanted to finish the Pandavas forever. While Pandavas had the blessings of all the righteous leaders, every pious person had warned Duryodhana against likely defeat as Krishna was on Pandava’s side.

Shrewd Duryodhana schemed to get blessings from Gandhari, his mother, who was a lady of severe austerity as she was highly devoted to her blind husband Dhritrashtra and had thereby developed rare spiritual powers, which Durydhana was aware of. He knew that whatever she utters will come true. Relying on her powers and the affection for her eldest son, Duryodhana wanted to take advantage of the filial relationship, and get an assurance of victory from the unfailing efficacy of his mother’s voice. He felt she has no choice but bless her son with victory and her blessings can’t prove false.

So, Duryodhana went to Gandhari’s chamber and prostrated at her feet. He said, “the war against the Pandavas has been declared. Both armies are in readiness to shoot the first arrow, I beseech you for the blessings so that my enemies shall have destruction and I the crown. I do not want to loose a single pinpoint of my kingdom. Ma, bless me, bless me, with success.” Gandhari is put in a dilemma. It is her own son begging her for the protection and assurance of
Victory and as a mother she loves him. But as a pious and righteous lady she does not approve of his unfair grabbing of power and property. She knows he will not win as he is not virtuous & is being propelled by evil desires.

Yet, she can’t spurn him and neither she can assure him of success as the she is telling a lie, which she can’t utter at any cost. Keeping quiet is also not proper.
Hence Gandhari the pious lady with wisdom, lifted her son embraced him and said, “ Son, Yatho Dharma, Tatho Krishna, Yatho Krishna Tatho Jayah”; which means where there is Dharma, Krishna is there, and where there is Krishna Victory will be there. Duryodhana was speechless and they parted. The result of the war is known to everyone.

Hence, a person must be fair, virtuous, and follower of Dharma for success in life. Any success achieved by wrongful means will be temporary and will always haunt the persons mind for the wrong doings and hence will not allow him to be happy and peaceful. Hence remember Yatho Dharma Tatho Jayah.
