Ramakrishna said that you should learn to live in the world with detachment by practising devotion, deep thinking and right action. Ramakrishna would explain this through simple examples taken from daily life. “If you first smear your palms with oil and then cut the jackfruit, the milky exudation of the fruit will not stick to your hands and inconvenience you.
If you first fortify yourself with the True knowledge of universal Self, and then live in the midst of wealth and worldliness, surely they will in no way affect you…. The magnetic needle always points to the north, and hence it is that the sailing vessel does not lose its direction. So long as the heart of the man is directed towards God, he cannot be lost in the ocean of worldliness.”
“A boy holding to a pillar or post whirls about it with headlong speed without fear of falling, so you should perform your worldly duties fixing your hold firmly upon God, & you shall be free from danger.”
Another example is, “Rural women carry four to five pots of water kept one above the other upon their heads, talking all the way about their joys and sorrows, without spilling a single drop of water. Similarly the traveller on his path of virtue should walk along his route. In whatever circumstances he may be placed, he should take care that his heart does not swerve from the true path.
To live a spiritual life one need not run away from the world, but learn the art of spiritual living. Take small steps such as, regular prayers, reading and thinking positive and pure thoughts, working unselfishly for the good of the others.
Ramakrishna said please make some time for solitude and analyse your mind and motives, bravely encounter your fears and anxieties, develop firm faith in God and resolve to experience Him. Occasional withdrawals from active life will help you live life effectively and purposefully. Self-analysis done frequently is the key for Self-Realisation.
